The Beijing Arbitration Commission, also known as the Beijing International Arbitration Center (the “BAC/BIAC”), was established on September 28, 1995. In 1998, the BAC/BIAC became the first self-funded arbitration institution in China. Since 2018, it has been included in the “One-stop” Diversified International Commercial Dispute Resolution Mechanism as one of the first institutions by the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China. Over the past two decades, the BAC/BIAC is also widely accepted as one of the leading arbitration institutions internationally.
The BAC/BIAC currently has 627 arbitrators on its panel, including 162 foreign arbitrators, and is committed to provide independent, impartial, professional, efficient and excellent dispute resolution services. As of December 31, 2019, the BAC/BIAC accepted 45,197 arbitration cases in total. The total amount in dispute reached CNY 431.21 billion. In 2019, the BAC/BIAC accepted 6,732 arbitration cases in total and the total amount in dispute reached CNY 94.8 billion. The caseload and disputed amount undertaken by the BAC/BIAC reached a record high and were ranked among the best in the industry in 2019. The BAC/BIAC has also witnessed rapid growth in its international caseload and a remarkable surge in the disputed amount. In 2019, the numbers of cases filed with the BAC/BIAC are 163 in international cases and the total amount in dispute reached CNY 6.95 billion. Besides, the case procedures, types of parties, applicable laws and arbitration languages are becoming increasingly diverse.
As one of the leading arbitration institutions in China, the BAC/BIAC delivers reliable dispute resolution services and encourages the exchange of best practices. To this end, it organizes the Annual Summit on Commercial Dispute Resolution in China, sponsors the Biennial ICCA Conference, joins forces with the CAJAC (China-Africa Joint Arbitration Centre) initiative and contributes to the deliberations of the UNCITRAL Working Group II as an observer. The BAC/BIAC is a significant force promoting institutional cooperation in the international arbitration community, as well as the internationalization of the laws and practices of Chinese arbitration.
